3 Times You Should Listen to Your Gut, and 3 Times You Shouldn't

When should you trust that gut feeling? And when would that be a mistake? I often hear clients grappling with this.

When I was in my mid-20s I travelled around Asia and Europe alone. I had a conscious plan to follow my gut when it came to my safety. If something or someone felt a bit off, I trusted that feeling rather than try to logic my way out of it. I also trusted in some people and situations where all my instincts told me it was fine, and indeed it was.

In the work context, gut instincts are important, but of course shouldn’t be the sole determinant in your decision making.

Here are three instances when listening to your gut feeling can be the right thing to do…

  1. When Something Feels Off

If a decision or situation just doesn't sit right, it often means there's more to uncover. Trust that feeling.

  2. When Relationships Are at Stake

When it comes to people, sometimes our instincts pick up on subtleties. If you feel like someone needs support, reach out.

  3. When Time Is Limited

Sometimes, there's no time for detailed analysis. In urgent situations, gut reactions can be life-savers.

However, there are times I've learned NOT to solely rely on my gut:

  1. When Data Contradicts

If hard evidence opposes your gut, it's wise to reconsider. Hello, conspiracy theorists.

  2. When Biases Sneak In

Our instincts can be tainted by personal biases. Always self-reflect.

  3. When Stakeholders Disagree

If key players see things differently, it's crucial to understand why before acting.

Balancing instinct with logic is a cornerstone of effective leadership. Remember, it's okay to trust your gut, AND pair it with reason.

Until next week,

Take care of yourself and others,

Madeleine
