Under the pump? 5 ways to make more time for strategic thinking

As a leader, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operational and execution work, leaving little time for strategic thinking. However, strategic thinking is essential to the long-term success of any organisation (and of course your career!). Here are some practical tips for finding time and mental bandwidth for strategic thinking.

1. Schedule dedicated time for strategic thinking

One of the best ways to make time for strategic thinking is to schedule it in your calendar. Block out a specific time each week or month for strategic thinking, and treat it as you would any other meeting or appointment. During this time, turn off distractions, including email and phone notifications, and focus solely on strategic thinking.

2. Delegate operational tasks

Many leaders feel like they have to be involved in every aspect of the organisation, from operations to execution. However, delegating tasks to others can free up time and mental bandwidth for strategic thinking. Identify tasks that can be delegated to others, and trust your team to execute them effectively. Read more about how to delegate here.

3. Prioritise tasks based on impact

Not all tasks are created equal. Prioritise tasks based on their impact on the organisation's long-term success. Tasks that drive you further forward and have a higher impact on the organisation's strategic goals should take precedence over lower-impact tasks.

4. Foster a culture of strategic thinking

As a leader, you can foster a culture of strategic thinking within your organisation. Encourage your team members to think strategically and share their ideas with you. Make sure team members are not having to spend all week running around putting out fires. Create opportunities for team members to engage in strategic discussions and decision-making processes.

5. Focus on impact, not just outputs

Many leaders focus solely on outputs, such as completing a project or meeting a deadline. However, it's essential to focus on outcomes as well, such as the impact of a project on the organisation's long-term success. By focusing on impact, you can ensure that your efforts are aligned with the organisation's strategic goals.

Finding time and mental bandwidth for strategic thinking can be a challenge for leaders, but when you can make it a priority you ensure the long-term success of your organisation.
