Influence vs manipulation

If you’re someone who “doesn’t do politics”, consider whether this Venn diagram (I do love a Venn diagram) might help you to dial up your impact without sacrificing your moral compass.

Whether through manipulation or influence, a leader drives decisions and changes how others act or respond.

Both methods lead to decisions being made, but influence fosters ownership, while manipulation breeds resentment or compliance.

Manipulation means …

Hidden Agendas: Manipulation often involves disguising the true intent behind actions, creating mistrust and uncertainty in others. Not productive.

Short-term Gains: Manipulators focus on immediate results, often at the expense of long-term relationships and sustainability. High levels of quitting and difficulty recruiting? Not good.

Coercion and Deception: Manipulation uses tactics like fear, guilt, or deceit to control others, pushing them toward a decision or action they may not fully agree with – not great for stickability of the decision, let alone the ongoing relationship.

Power Imbalance: Manipulation exploits vulnerabilities or weaknesses in others to gain an advantage, creating an unequal dynamic. The manipulator may enjoy the win and be oblivious to the longer term costs.

Influence means …

Transparency: Influence relies on open communication and clarity of intent, fostering trust and respect in relationships.

Long-term Relationships: Influential leaders focus on building rapport and long-term partnerships, leading to sustained success and mutual benefit.

Collaboration and Persuasion: Influence involves understanding others' needs and motivations, using logical reasoning and empathy to persuade for mutual gain, rather than force.

Empowerment: Influence creates a sense of shared power, enabling others to feel heard, valued, and motivated to contribute. Much better for longer term results, as well as for getting a good night’s sleep.
