Maximise your impact as a leader by managing your reputation

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you have a reputation.

The key is understanding how others currently see you and deciding if that aligns with the impact you want to make. Are you known as someone who listens and supports? As someone who is decisive and strategic? Or maybe (eek!) as someone who is hard to work for and slow to deliver??

The right reputation can significantly amplify your impact as a leader. It’s not about excessive self-promotion or building a "brand" that’s separate from the real you; it’s about ensuring that your values and strengths are recognised in ways that increase your effectiveness.

Your reputation shapes how others perceive your actions, trust your decisions, and respond to your leadership.

If you’re not sure what your reputation is—or if it's not quite what you want - here are three ways to adjust and align it with your desired impact:

1. Ask for Honest Feedback

Ask your peers, mentors, and team members how they perceive you as a leader – and listen to what they tell you! This data provides valuable insights into your current reputation and highlights areas where you might need to make adjustments.

2. Align Actions with Values

How do you show up every day? If you want to be seen as approachable, make time to listen to your team. If you aim to be recognised as strategic, demonstrate this in meetings and decision-making.

3. Adjust through Small Changes

If your reputation isn’t where you want it to be, focus on small, consistent actions over time to reshape perceptions. Authenticity is key - ensure that changes reflect your true values and strengths.

I’ve worked with many fantastic leaders whose reputations had taken a hit for various reasons. When that happens, it takes time – and conscious effort – to shift the unfavourable lens through which they’re being seen. A phoney spin campaign won’t cut it – you need to be real, and stick at it.

Your reputation either enhances your impact or creates obstacles. The more it aligns with who you truly are and how you wish to lead, the greater your influence and effectiveness as a leader.

If you’re interested in some support as you work on your leadership reputation, let me know.

Until next week, take care of yourself and others
