What to do when your predecessor was a nightmare

Last week I shared some tips for making a role your own when your predecessor was a superstar. You’d think that the reverse would be easy. Surely stepping in and taking over from a nightmare leader would be a piece of cake. Not so fast…

Here are three things to look out for and three tips to help you succeed…

What to Look Out For:

  1. Trust Issues: Be aware of trust deficits. The team might be wary of leadership changes and tar you with your predecessor’s brush and interpret your well-meaning overtures as threats.

  2. Low Morale: Check the team's morale. Previous poor leadership often leaves a demotivated workforce.

  3. Hidden Problems: Look for issues that were ignored or hidden. There could be unresolved conflicts or process breakdowns.

Tips for Success:

  1. Communicate Openly: Your team will be super attuned to BS. Let your team know you're here to listen and support, and be as transparent as you can.

  2. Build Trust: Take time to build trust. Be consistent, approachable, honest, and reliable. Be clear your focus is the team’s success, not just your own.

  3. Quick Wins: Just like when you’re following a superstar, identify and achieve quick wins to demonstrate positive change and boost confidence in your leadership. Then keep going!
