What to do when your predecessor was a superstar

Stepping into a new role when your predecessor was a superstar can be intimidating. The bar is high, and comparisons are inevitable. But, you can still shine in your own right.

Start by acknowledging the legacy left behind. Showing respect for the foundation your predecessor built helps earn the team’s respect. At the same time, focus on bringing your unique strengths to the table. You were chosen for this role because of your distinct perspective, so lean into that.

Open communication is crucial. Share your vision and plans with your team, and be transparent about your approach. This helps build trust and aligns everyone towards common goals. Spending time getting to know your team members individually will also pay off. Understanding their strengths, aspirations, and concerns helps build strong personal connections and leverages the collective strengths of the team.

Get some early wins. Identify areas where you can make an immediate positive impact to build momentum and demonstrate your effectiveness.

While respecting the past is important, staying true to yourself is equally crucial. Authenticity resonates with people and helps in building genuine relationships.

Taking over from a superstar is no small feat, but it’s also an opportunity to establish yourself as a capable and respected leader. You can do it!

Until next week,

Take care of yourself and others
