The myths of “executive presence” – and what it really means
“You need more executive presence.”
If you’ve ever received this feedback (or given it), you know how frustratingly vague it can be. What does it actually mean? A deeper voice? A blazer? Lots of intense eye contact?
Some terrible advice I’ve heard about “executive presence” includes:
“Just lower your voice and slow down.”
Because nothing says credibility like sounding like a tired audiobook narrator.
“Always speak last.”
Great - unless your key point is already covered, or you just look disengaged while you wait to drop your mike.
“Be more polished.”
So I should… buy a better facial exfoliant?
In reality, executive presence is about confidence, clarity, and composure. It’s about making people feel they’re in capable hands, especially under pressure…
Confidence in context
Confidence isn’t about taking up all the space in a room. It’s about knowing when to own the space and when to create space for others. The most impactful leaders lift the conversation, not just their own voice.
Clarity
If people leave confused, it doesn’t matter how ‘authoritative’ you sounded. Executive presence is about making the complex simple. Jargon and long-winded explanations kill presence faster than a hesitant voice ever could.
Composure
The best leaders don’t just look calm; they make others feel calmer. This is where physiology matters—if your heart rate is up, so is everyone else’s. Sleep, breathing (make sure you do that), and even simple things like a pause before responding can work wonders.
Forget the tricks. Executive presence isn’t about a script; it’s about making sure people trust you to lead. When you’re feeling confident and composed, and expressing yourself with clarity, all the “techniquey” bits like open body language just happen naturally, and in a way that’s authentic to you.
What’s the worst (or best) advice you’ve ever heard about executive presence?
Until next week, take care of yourself and others
